Lungs

with Teemu Lehmusruusu

2024

“The work draws a different kind of map of the invisible Helsinki.”

Lungs is an experimental documentary following the carbon fluxes through the four seasons in the lungs of the city of Helsinki, in its most important green areas. A computer-based animation utilizing laser scanning and carbon flow data brings to life invisible events taking place in urban space – the functioning of its ecosystems and the central importance of this in the city’s climate resilience and livability. The areas featured in the work have been selected based on their simultaneous carbon sequestration capacity, biodiversity and the social values experienced by the residents.

The work was realized in dialogue with the researchers of the CO-CARBON project, which investigates the carbon sequestration and storage capacity of urban green. Artists Roberto Fusco and Teemu Lehmusruusu have collaborated on carbon flow data with Professor Leena Järvi of the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) at the University of Helsinki and Ranja Hautamäki, Professor of Landscape Architecture at Aalto University, utilising socio-ecological research done by Jussi Lampinen from the University of Helsinki. Sound design by Andrea Mancianti, with vocals by Marloes van Son.

With the kind support of CO-CARBON / Strategic Research Council, and AVEK.

Produced by Telling Tree art+rsrch and Kunstventures.
